Packing your hat for travel is easier said than done. Sure, it seems as simple as throwing the hat in your suitcase with everything else. But that can easily lead to crushed hats and the pain of trying to restore their normal shape. If you like to wear hats that are a little fancier than baseball caps, learn these packing tips that will save you the trouble that comes with a crushed hat.

Types of Travel Hats

When it comes to traveling with hats, it can easily become a chore – especially fedoras. But if you’re a hat person, or you just need that extra protection from the sun, you have more options than ever for packing a great travel hat. The good thing about hats is there are thousands to choose from.

When trying to pack a hat, you might find it to be more difficult than you think. Here are a few great travel hat options including sun hats, fishing, and trail/hiking hats.

Sun Hats

Summer is here and we’re already planning our next kayaking trips or beach get-together. One of the things you shouldn’t overlook when making plans is choosing a good hat, whether it’s for a vacation or for day to day use. Not wearing a protective headwear during summer isn’t just uncomfortable, but it can be a health hazard, too.

Hiking/Trail Hats

Every hiker knows that protection on the trail is important. Even if a person is using a hiking guide for beginners, they understand that their safety and protection are core essentials to wilderness survival. Mother Nature is beautiful, but she is also strong.

Hikers primarily need protection from extreme weather conditions like heavy rain or snow when cold weather hiking, but the sun can be extreme too. Sun protection is important on the trail because it keeps your skin from burning.

The best hiking that would provide protection, but still be comfortable to use and wear and should be added to the top of your day hiking checklist.

Fishing Hats

There’s no better time to go fishing than when the sun shines bright, the day is clear and nature comes alive. Unfortunately, this means being under the full glare of the sun exposed to its fierce rays.

Forget or carry the wrong one and you end up so miserable you can’t be effective or even enjoy the excursion.

How to Pack a Hat in a Suitcase

Actually packing the hat is very simple if follow these 4 steps. Of course, all you’ll need is the hat, your suitcase, and obviously your hands. This will work on any hat of your choosing, as long as you follow the instructions below.

  1. First, flip hat upside down and place on a flat surface.
  2. Next, fill the crown of the hat with little items such as undergarments, t-shirts or tank
  3. Then lay the filled hat right-side up on the bottom of an empty suitcase.
  4. Finally, Pack remaining items around the hat, holding its form.

This should’ve taken less than five minutes, and by now you should have your hat successfully packed and completely crush proof.

How to Pick a Travel Hat

The most important packing tip for a hat is, picking a hat that travels well. A hat that can handle being stuffed into your travel backpack or soaked by a sudden downpour is far superior to the most stylish hat on earth if it needs its own special case and meticulous care.

You don’t need more luggage. And while you can pack a hat without folding it, it’s nice not to have to worry about it.

In a Travel Hat, there are four key properties you need to look for. Portability, Comfort, Style, and Practicality.

  1. Portability: The Hat should be easy to bring from Point A to Point B. Depending on your specifications, you may want your hat to fit in your pocket, in your suitcase, or maybe you just want to keep it on your head. The big question is whether or not the hat is portable enough for you.
  2. Comfort: This is pretty straight forward, the hat should be able to be worn for a long period of time without causing discomfort to anything on your head. If it isn’t able to do that, I wouldn’t recommend it.
  3. Style: Hats are all about style. Make sure your hat looks good on you, get a few opinions and see what others think. Also, remember to select a hat that compliments the outfits that you’ve chosen to wear on the trip, take multiple hats if necessary. It is essential to make sure that your hat looks good on you.
  4. Practicality: Practicality is everything, just make sure that your hat is useful, and it fulfills the reason why you’re using it in the first place. The hat you use should match the environment you’re in.
Now you can buy separate hats for different occasions, but I have a hat for you that compared to all the other hats takes the cake out of all of them.
